Yuck!!! Gross!!!

Gangrene is GROSS!  If you like to be scared or want your stomach to churn, Google the word gangrene under the image tab.  The pictures that appear are stomach churning.  If you search gangrene under the web tab, information about the topic is what you’ll find.  I did both of these things to prepare for a Sunday School lesson.  I learned more than I ever cared to know.  This is what gangrene is according to a medical site:

Gangrene occurs when tissue dies (necrosis) because its blood supply is interrupted.

After discussing gangrene with our youth group, needless to say they were completely grossed out, I posed this question.  Is there anything interrupting the blood supply in their life?  Basically, gangrene is sin eating away at our spiritual life until eventually it rots away.  It will cut off our blood supply (the blood that Jesus shed), and gangrene will set in and try to take over.

Physically speaking, when a person’s limb is infected with gangrene, they have two options – have the infected limb amputated or let gangrene takeover and they die.

Sin (gangrene) is taking over so many lives.  The only result of sin (gangrene) not being amputated from our lives is death.  Thank God we have a heavenly father that will forgive us when we genuinely repent.   However, we can’t have a lifestyle of sin and think we’re going to effect the kingdom of God for the better.

1 John 1:9

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life

through Christ Jesus our Lord

What stood out the most to me during this lesson was how some of the students reacted to the images – saying gross or shielding their eyes.  Bottom line they didn’t want to see it.  (I couldn’t blame them because they were disgusting)  That is how we should view sin.  To have to look at sin, should make us want to shield our eyes, let alone partake of it.  Our culture has become so comfortable with sin that we don’t even realize we could be walking around with gangrenous limbs that is going to eventually take us out of here.

As Christians, we’re going to have to develop a “Yuck that’s GROSS” sin mentality!
